When you’re self-employed it’s really simple; if you don’t work you don’t get any money. However, now that I’ve ditched self-employment to become a bona fide employee I’m discovering the benefit of ‘sick pay‘. What a truly marvellous phenomenon it is!
After suffering with persistent cough, instead of continuing to struggle in to work in order to ensure I could afford to pay my bills, I was able to take a couple of days off so that my poor old lungs could recover, without me getting stressed out over money. Being able to rest at home fully focussed on simply getting better was not only good for my physical health but also my mental well-being.
This is actually a win-win situation all round as not only was I able to return to work fighting fit within a relatively short period of time, my co-workers no longer had to listening to me hacking up my lungs all day. Result!
If you’ve spent the past decade saving your spare pennies, birthday money and Christmas cash, the odds are that sooner or later your efforts will start paying dividends. When this happens you realise that all of those bottles of booze and all of that greasy junk food you denied yourself will have all been totally worthwhile as not only will your health have benefited, your money remains a hundred percent safe and you’ll be rewarded with some extra cash every now and again simply for being frugal.
I’m quite happy to admit that I often buy cheap clothes from Ebay or to eat Tesco Value meals; in fact, it’s helped me to become more creative and I’ve certainly never suffered because of it. Although there’s never any guarantee of a win in the monthly Premium Bonds draw, by the law of averages, every so often you’ll be treated to a little windfall, which is always a nice surprise, and with interest rates from banks at an all-time low it’s actually quite a good return on your investment. You’ve gotta be in it to win it!
I have to admit, that even though I spend quite a bit of time entering online competitions, due to social media creating literally thousands more entries for each one, the odds of winning are at an all time low, but since being single I appear to have had rather a good run of luck regarding prizes.
Not only have I already received a Go Pro Camera (kerching), Swarovski Binoculars (more kerching), a £50 household cleaning products e-voucher, a 3 figure sum gift voucher, Ray Ban Aviators, an expensive wooden play kitchen for children and alcohol (always welcome), I’ve accumulated numerous small wins of cash, toys, DVDs, toiletries, mugs and so on…
Not bad for a ‘hobby‘, and now I’ve just been told I’ve won a new water butt! It may be a very old cliché, but you really do have to be ‘in it to win it‘.
While pre-arranged nights out are great, unexpected last-minute nights out are a very welcome surprise indeed. An email out of the blue regarding a Quiz Night at a local pub led to a flurry of social media messages, and a few hours later I was being chauffeured to a fun evening out with my mates! Didn’t see THAT coming when I crawled out of bed this morning.
After 3 hours of drinks, chat, cheesey tunes and even some correct answers, we’d managed to win meals and wine! What had started out to be a cold, wet and rather miserable Thursday ended up being extremely entertaining. Just goes to show, you simply never know what’s coming next…
Well, I’ve already enjoyed several Quiz Nights, and a Quiz with Musical Bingo, and now I’ve been to a Quiz with a meal! The event was a fundraiser for a local Wildlife charity and the venue was a fabulous posh golf club right next to a beautiful lake. As it was such a warm evening it was the perfect place to chill out with a drink while watching ducks and moorhens swimming among the water lillies.
Being veggie, my yummy jacket spud was covered in cheddar cheese while the carnivores tucked into chilli. The quiz consisted of questions our team were actually able to answer, for once, and although we didn’t win any of the raffle prizes a thoroughly good time was had by all.
What an excellent way to spend an evening; stunning location, great company, delicious meal, fun quiz and all in aid of a worthwhile cause. Well done to the organisers – can’t wait for the next one!
When your hobby is entering online competitions, by the law of averages sooner or later you’ll win something. Of course, most of the time your ‘fabulous‘ prize will turn out to be the DVD of a movie you have little or no interest in watching, or a CD of a band you can’t stand (this is where Ebay or Cash Converters comes in handy), however, if you put the effort in and don’t lose faith you might just get something marvellous through the door.
In recent years the odds of winning anything at all have been slashed by the introduction of social media into the equation, but the old cliche still stands that “You have to be in it to win it.” If you’re prepared to accept that there are no guarantees with this pastime, and simply look upon it as a way to fill any spare time you have, you’ll eventually be rewarded handsomely for your efforts.
I now can’t wait to start spending using my new, three-figure-sum gift card – yippee!!!
